Project Launched To Make Ladakh Resilient To Climate Change

Days after the UN IPCC’s alarming report on vulnerability of the entire Hindu Kush Himalayan region due to climate change, a group of NGOs — backed by head of the Drikung Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism Chetsang Rinpoche, corporate houses and local communities — on Sunday launched an ambitious project to make Ladakh ready to face the challenge of global warming through multiple adaptation measures.

Launched in presence of Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, the project, called Green Himalayas, is aimed at rejuvenating fragile ecosystems of the region by creating a green cover in the foothills of the Himalayas and create a model site at Phobrang in Ladakh.

The site, covering 250 acres, will be developed in a sustainable manner which can open economic avenues for local youth, women and the larger community in Ladakh. It will be based on the concept of creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where energy demand will be met by renewable sources.
