Jammu And Kashmir Administration Revokes Public Safety Act Against 26 Detainees newsnation.in
The government on Friday revoked the Public Safety Act, 1978 against 26 people who are lodged in various jails in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the sources, all the 26 detainees are mainstream political activists who were charged under PSA a few months ago. This is seen as an attempt by the union territory administration to ease the situation in the region.
These people were picked up and booked under the PSA after the Centre’s decision on August 5 last year to revoke special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate it into two union territories. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court in its significant judgement with implications on basic freedoms beyond Kashmir, said that the internet access is a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution and asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to review within a week all curbs in the union territory.
