Girish Chandra Murmu took oath as the first Lt. Governor of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The oath was administered by Chief Justice of J&K High Court, Gita Mittal. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan in Srinagar. A 1985 batch IAS officer from Gujarat, Murmu was an expenditure secretary at the Centre. RK Mathur also took oath as the Lt. Governor of Ladakh. Mathur inspected a guard of honor by the local police after the ceremony. J&K officially lost its statehood and was split into two UTs – J&K and Ladakh.
