A2008 Indian Police Service(IPS) officer Abdul Jabbar has been awarded President's Gallantry award for leading the operation that eliminated Hizbul commander Burhan Wani. On a specific intelligence input, Abdul Jabar, the then SSP Anantnag, led a team of policemen that killed poster boy of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir on July 8, 2016. Kashmir valley was plunged into chaos paralysing the state for over 7 months. The Deputy Inspector General of Police(DIG) Nitish Kumar along with Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Abdul Jabbar were both shunted out to calm tempers down.
Jabbar hails from Hajipur in Aurangabad, Bihar. Though the encounter happened in 2016, the officer who is currently on central deputation to Intelligence Bureau(IB), is receiving award belatedly. The period for gallantry is for the previous year but in this case, an exception has been made to reward the officer with President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), which is the highest police medal for valour.
