Ladakh has been granted the status of a Union Territory, bifurcated from Jammu and Kashmir.
Radha Krishna Mathur took oath as the first lieutenant governor in the presence of High Court Chief Justice Geeta Mittal.
Celebrations ensued in Leh main market. People were seen dancing, rejoicing and overwhelmed over the fulfilment of a long-pending demand.
Banners congratulating people of Ladakh were put in the market.
People distributed white auspicious scarves and students hoisted Tricolour.
The market place resembled a carnival. The event was organised by the government, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and BJP workers. Traditional folk music played till noon.
"Our dream of 70 years has been fulfilled. We cannot believe ourselves and feel thankful to the government for the decision," said Thupstand Tsewang, a leader who campaigned for UT and separation from Kashmir.
