Srinagar-Jammu Highway Opens For One Way Traffic brighterkashmir.com
The Srinagar Jammu highway was opened for one way traffic as the weather improved Sunday. However, the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region, remained closed due to heavy snowfall since November 6.
Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed on Friday night following landslides between Ramban and Ramsu, a traffic police official said.
He said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Beacon, responsible for widening and maintaining the highway, have pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. “However, due to shooting stones and continued landslides, road clearance operation was getting hampered,” he said.
Several thousand vehicles, including those carrying passengers, got stranded on the highway, official sources said.
Later, the highway again reopened at 2000 hrs after remaining closed for 18 hours. The stranded vehicles, including 1000 carrying passengers were allowed to move towards Jammu, they said adding majority vehicles were cleared during the night.
