On October 17, 1949, Article 370 was incorporated in the Constitution of India. It was intended to give special status to Jammu and Kashmir by allowing it to have a separate constitution. Under the Act, the central government had the powers to frame laws in three areas of governance: defence, communications, and foreign affairs. Unfortunately, the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s interest in J&K created challenges for the nation.
